Make sure you've turned on the keyboard shortcuts.

C	Compose a new message.
Shift + C	Compose a new message in new window.
D	Compose a new message in new tab.
E	Archive Selected mails.
F	Forward.
Shift + F	Forward in new window.
/	Puts the cursor in the search box.
K	Move to newer conversation.
J	Move to older conversation.
M	Mute conversation.
O or Enter	Open your conversation.
X	Select message.
S	Adds or removes a star.
!	Report Spam.
R	Replies to the message sender.
Shift + R	Reply in new window.
A	Reply all.
Shift + A	Reply all in new window.
Ctrl + S	Saves the current text as draft when composing a message.
#	Moves the conversation to trash.
L	Opens the labels menu to label a conversation.
V	Moves the conversation from the inbox to a different label.
Shift + I	Mark as read.
Shift + U	Mark as unread.
Z	Undo your previous action.
Q	Move the cursor to the chat search.
