Modem
What is a Modem?
- Short for Modulator/Demodulator.
- Converts analog signals to digital and vice versa.
- Connects the computer to the internet.
- The signals that used for transmission through cables are analog.
- The computer can process only digital signals. So has to be converted to digital which is done by the modem.
Why do we need a modem?
- The signals that are used for transmission of information across the cables are analog signals.
- Computer can operate through digital signals and the signals we get through cable are analog. So it has to be converted using a modem.
What is the difference between modem and router?
- Router connects different devices and directs the information collected by the modem.
- Now a days most devices come with router and modem both combined in a device.
Is modem mandatory or optional?
- Depending on the Internet Service Provider and their delivery system we may require a modem or we dont.
- Most service providers provide them during connection and depending on service providers the modem may be required or may not.
